Wayne Rooney has never been far away from the next scandal during his storied career as a player, a manager and now a BBC pundit.

Ever since his days as a teenage prodigy at Everton, the Manchester United legend and former England captain's infidelities have been published for the world to see, leaving his childhood sweetheart and wife Coleen to battle through the couple's dirty laundry being aired in public.

On the pitch, Rooney was winning Premier League titles and becoming both United and England's record goalscorer. Away from it, his relationship was rocked by scandals and cheating allegations, but the couple stayed strong through incredibly choppy waters, and will be celebrating Wayne's 40th birthday today (Friday, October 24).

From alleged romps with grandmothers to threesomes with prostitutes – here's a look back at Wayne Rooney's most shameful moments.

Rumours first surfaced of Rooney’s alleged infidelity back in 2004 when The Sunday Mirror reported he cheated on then-girlfriend Coleen with a 21-year-old prostitute called Charlotte Glover.

Charlotte was allegedly paid £140 for the hook-up and left with a signed photograph as a memento. Months later, it was reported the player paid several visits to a £45-a-time brothel in Liverpool, which was caught on CCTV.

It was alleged he slept with Gina McCarrick, 37, and a 48-year-old grandmother Patricia Tierney, nicknamed the Auld Slapper, who wore a rubber catsuit. Patricia denied the claims, but Rooney went on to admit to sleeping with unnamed prostitutes.

He said: "Foolish as it now seems I did on occasions visit massage parlours and prostitutes. I now regret it deeply and hope people may understand that it was the sort of mistake you make when you are young and stupid.

"It was at a time when I was very young and immature."

Coleen didn't publicly comment on the claims at the time, but she later wrote in her book, 'Welcome to My World', that she and Rooney had not yet slept with each other when he visited the establishment.

Rooney was back on the front page back in July 2009 – a month before wife Coleen gave birth – when £1,200 a night prostitute Jenny Thompson claimed Rooney had cheated on Coleen again.

Jenny claimed the pair had several liaisons and branded Rooney’s bedroom skills as “pretty average”.

After the allegations came out a year later, heartbroken Coleen moved out of the family home and in with her parents. At the time, Rooney said: “My life is in ruins… I’ve been so stupid.” And Coleen took him back.

After the claims with Jenny emerged, Rooney reportedly had a threesome with her and Helen Wood. Both women publicly apologised to Coleen, while Helen, who went on to win Big Brother in 2014, said the footballer was contrite.

In a tell-all book, Helen wrote: "It was years ago and it was all out of my control when it happened and I have made a massive mistake that I do regret."

The former call girl claimed Rooney was full of remorse after the incident, alleging that he told her: "Why the hell did I do that? I feel really s*** already – I'm begging you two not to say anything. It will ruin my marriage if it gets out and having a kid means everything to me."

Coleen forgave her husband and gave birth to sons Klay in 2013 and Kit in 2016.

Rooney was once again caught out in September 2017 when police caught him driving drunk in 29-year-old Laura Simpson's car, while Coleen was pregnant with the couple's fourth child, Cass.

As a result of the incident, Rooney was banned from driving and had to perform community service. Distraught Coleen moved back in with her parents, but went back to the couple's home two days later.

Sitting down with Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofield on This Morning, Laura Simpson – who met the player through a friend – claimed the pair shared a "kiss and a cuddle" before the player "ogled her breasts".

Laura later revealed the conversation she allegedly had with Coleen: “She asked me to tell her what happened. She seemed unhappy with the fact that we had left a nightclub in a cab together to go to my car.”

Coleen declared she would have been "fine" as a single mum, but decided to forgive Wayne again. The Independent revealed she wrote on Facebook: “I know I would be fine on my own, with just me and my children, but I don’t want to live like that, I want to try and continue our marriage and live as a family, because that’s what I want to do.

“I know my own mind and it’s something I want to try and work on… Yes, it has been a s*** time.”

Holding his hands up to his mistake, Rooney later said: "Sometimes you make mistakes. I held my hands up. I made a mistake.

"I knew straight away I had made a stupid mistake and I have to move on. It's not nice. I've got children and it is not nice for them to see that and I try to move on and learn from it which I feel I am doing."

In February 2019, after Rooney had moved to America, joining Washington-based team DC United, he and barmaid Vickie Roseik went on a 10-hour bender in Florida.

It is thought she recognised him in the bar days earlier and invited him to join her and her friends who were heading to a late-night bar over Super Bowl weekend.

Vicki was said to have given Rooney a lift to the bar where she and a friend drank for 30 minutes and then left, though nothing is suggested to have happened between the pair.

Months later, Rooney was papped in a hotel lobby in Vancouver at 5am following an unknown woman into a lift. What happened next is unclear, but Coleen was spotted without her wedding ring and reportedly demanded he fly home.

Rooney found himself in another awkward position in 2021, though there is no suggestion he did anything wrong, when he was snapped asleep with young women in a hotel room.

The then-Derby County manager was pictured by Snapchat model Tayler Ryan and her pals Elise Melvin and Brooke Morgan. Rooney was left furious with the snaps being sent without his permission and feared he'd been the victim of a "set-up".

Rooney has since opened up about his regret over sordid affairs that could have cost him his marriage with Coleen.

Speaking on his Amazon Prime Video documentary, he said: "There stuff that has happened in the past, like things with girls for instance. It is stuff that I regret.

"It is stuff that I feel has stuck against my name. I think it is important, because it is part of what has happened in my life growing up and it has stuck.

"Maybe time is my reputation as a person. People still see that and they look at me in a different way. I am not that person. I am not that type of person."

Last December, during his ill-fated spell in charge of Plymouth Argyle, Rooney took to Instagram to hit out at claims surrounding a man and a woman in a video that went viral on social media.

Rooney, who was living in Devon, away from Coleen and their children, explained how he simply invited a couple in after they gave him and his son a lift home.

He wrote on Instagram: "I am aware of a video circulating online. The video shows a man and woman looking around my apartment. The couple kindly gave me a lift home and were in there at the same time as my son who was visiting.

"Footage is from last summer. It is annoying that at least one online newspaper has chosen to edit the footage to make it appear as though a woman entered the apartment on her own. That is simply not true."
